Opera 101: Let’s Build an Opera

Friday May 4th
Boheme Café & Wine Bar
8pm-10pm

Join us for the last Opera 101 event of the 2011-2012 season. This month we will be seriously testing your opera chops and challenging you to use the knowledge you acquired this year to build an opera with us!

Will it be a romatic tale of a relationship gone awry between Buffy the vampire slayer and Harry Potter? Or maybe it will be a historical journey focusing on Genghis Khan and the Mongols? It’s up to you!

Thomas Ades’ Powder her Face is considered one of the most controversial operas of the past two decades. Detailing the marriage and subsequent divorce of the Duchess of Argyll, the story begins on the cusp of the duchess’s eviction from the hotel room she’s called home for the past two decades and follows her from a life of grandeur to a life of penniless obscurity. While considered quite a risqué opera, both my and Sandra Bernhard’s interpretation of the piece really tries to show the sadness surrounding the Duchess as people abandon her one by one.
